To Obey Is Better Than Sacrifice: 1 Samuel 15:22

By Frederick Spieker ·

King Saul thought he had found a clever way to please God. He had been told to do one thing, and he did another, then covered it with a religious offering. Samuel's answer has echoed for thousands of years: God is not after the show of sacrifice, but the trust behind it.

What Happened to Saul

God had given Saul a clear command through Samuel. Saul obeyed only in part. He spared the best of the livestock and kept the king of the Amalekites alive. When Samuel confronted him, Saul did not admit fault. He said the animals were being saved to sacrifice to the LORD. It sounded devout, but it was a way to keep what he wanted while looking faithful.

What Samuel Said

Samuel cut through the excuse. "Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams" (1 Samuel 15:22). Samuel was not saying sacrifice was worthless. God himself had commanded it. He was saying an offering can never stand in for a surrendered will.

The Heart Behind the Offering

This is a thread that runs all through Scripture. David prayed, "For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise" (Psalm 51:16-17). The outward gift matters because of the heart that gives it. Sacrifice without obedience is just a way of keeping control, and real sacrifice begins when we let go of it.

Obedience Is Where Love Shows Up

Jesus said, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments" (John 14:15). He also lived it. Paul writes that Christ "humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross" (Philippians 2:8). The greatest sacrifice in history was also the greatest act of obedience. When we deny ourselves and follow him, we are not earning God's favor with a bigger offering. We are answering love with trust, and that is the kind of giving God delights in.
