What Is the Peace Offering in the Bible?

The peace offering, also called the fellowship offering, was the joyful one. Part was burned on the altar, part went to the priest, and the worshiper and family ate the rest. It was a meal shared in God's presence.

What Leviticus 3 Describes

The animal could come from the herd or the flock, male or female, without blemish. The fat portions belonged to the LORD. It was offered for thanksgiving, for a vow, or as a freewill gift (Leviticus 7:11-16).

Peace Is More Than the Absence of Conflict

The Hebrew word shalom means wholeness, a relationship set right. The peace offering celebrated a people at rest with their God, gathered at His table.

Christ Our Peace

Paul writes that Christ "himself is our peace" and made peace "by the blood of his cross" (Ephesians 2:14; Colossians 1:20). The Lord's Supper echoes the peace offering: a meal in God's presence, made possible because a sacrifice was given.
