What Does It Mean to Store Up Treasures in Heaven?

Most of us spend our lives gathering. We work, we save, we build, and we hope the pile will keep us safe. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be provided for, and Jesus does not scold this longing to be secure. Instead He gently points us to a better place to put it. In the Sermon on the Mount He tells us where our real wealth belongs, and He does it with a picture anyone can understand.

What Jesus Actually Said

Jesus draws a plain contrast between two kinds of storehouses. "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal" (Matthew 6:19-20). Earthly treasure is not evil, but it is fragile. It fades, breaks, and slips away. Heavenly treasure is kept somewhere nothing can reach it.

Treasure That Cannot Be Lost

The problem with earthly wealth is not that it is too valuable, but that it is too weak to hold. Moths eat the fine garment, rust eats the coin, thieves carry off the rest. Everything we clutch has a built-in ending. We can spend a whole life protecting things that were always going to leave us. When Jesus invites us to store treasure in heaven, He is offering us the only investment that never depreciates. What we send ahead into God's keeping is safe forever, because it rests in hands that never fail.

How We Store It Up

So how do we lay up treasure in heaven? We do it by loving God and giving ourselves away to others here. Jesus told a rich young man, "sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven" (Matthew 19:21). The pattern runs through all of Scripture. Every act of mercy, every hour spent serving, every gift offered in love is quietly deposited where it will last. None of it is wasted, and none of it is forgotten by God. We store up treasure not by holding tighter but by opening our hands.

Where Your Heart Will Follow

Jesus finishes the thought with a line that searches us: "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:21). We do not first change our hearts and then our spending. It runs the other way. Put your treasure in heaven and your heart will lean toward heaven too. This is the heart of the whole book of Scripture, that life is found by denying yourself and pouring out your life for God and for others. What you give away in love is not lost. It is the only thing you truly keep.
