What Does It Mean That Jesus Is the Way, the Truth, and the Life?

It is one of the most familiar verses in the Bible: "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). We have heard it so often that we can miss what it actually says.
He does not say He knows the way
Notice the wording. Jesus does not say He knows the way, teaches the truth, or offers life. He says He is all three. That is not a small distinction. It is an enormous one.
If He is the Way, He is the pattern
If Jesus is the Way, then He is not only the path to God. He is the pattern by which life is meant to be lived. His life shows us how reality actually works: that we find life by giving it, and gain by surrendering.
If He is the Truth, He embodies it
If Jesus is the Truth, He does not only speak what is true. He embodies how the world truly works. The cross is not an exception to reality; it is the deepest expression of it.
If He is the Life, we receive it
If Jesus is the Life, then life is not something we manufacture or protect on our own. It is something we receive, by grace through faith. The Way, then, is not a set of rules but a Person to follow.
